O funk tira a ênfase da melodia e da harmonia e traz um groove rítmico forte de baixo elétrico e bateria no fundo. Como grande parte da música de inspiração africana, o funk normalmente consiste em um groove complexo com instrumentos rítmicos tocando grooves interligados. O funk usa os mesmos acordes estendidos ricamente coloridos encontrados no bebop, um subgênero do jazz.
